Solar Panel Technology in 2026: TOPCon, HJT, and ABC Explained

The End of PERC

For most of the 2010s, PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) was the dominant solar panel technology. In 2026, it's being rapidly replaced by more efficient alternatives. If you're buying solar now, you should understand what's available.

TOPCon Technology

TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) is the most widely deployed next-generation technology. It achieves efficiencies of 22–23.5% — significantly better than PERC's 20–21%. TOPCon panels are now available at competitive prices from brands like Jinko, LONGi, and Canadian Solar.

Best for: Most residential installations where cost-efficiency balance is the priority.

HJT Technology

HJT (Heterojunction Technology) combines crystalline silicon with amorphous silicon layers. It achieves efficiencies of 22–24% and has an excellent temperature coefficient, meaning it performs better in hot weather. REC and Panasonic are leading HJT brands.

Best for: Homes in hot climates (like SA) where temperature performance matters.

ABC Technology

ABC (All Back Contact) moves all electrical contacts to the rear of the panel, eliminating front-side shading. Aiko Solar's ABC panels achieve up to 24.1% efficiency — the highest available commercially. They also have the best temperature coefficient of any technology.

Best for: Homes with limited roof space that need maximum output per square metre.

Which Should You Choose?

For most SA homes, TOPCon offers the best value. For homes with limited roof space or very hot roofs, HJT or ABC panels justify their premium. Makn Energy will recommend the right technology for your specific situation.
